Silke and I really enjoyed the first Iron Man movie. It is also one of our favourite Blu-ray Discs not only for its entertainment value but also because of the superb image quality. Unsurprisingly we were both looking forward to the sequel ever since we saw the first trailer.

Last Tuesday we could finally watch Iron Man 2 in a local cinema. Just like the first part it is full of humour, action and amazing special effects. Robert Downey Jr. delivers another brilliant performance as Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man. Tony Stark’s attitude towards his status as a super hero is still refreshingly relaxed and his worst enemy is once again his ego. Even after a healthy dose of self-discovery and the unavoidable fight against a supervillain he remains a big kid which really enjoys flying around in his armoured suit and doesn’t take life very serious. This refreshing attitude is what makes this film really enjoyable.

While Iron Man 2 is not quite as good as the first part it is still very entertaining and definitely worth seeing. According to The Internet Movie Database there will be a third movie as well which I’m looking forward to.

The justice systems is sometimes hard to comprehend. Criminals walk free, politicians don’t even get charged with anything and people downloading music from the Internet are treated like dangerous criminals.

Law Abiding Citizen tells the story of a man who feels betrayed by the justice system after the murderer of his wife and daughter walks free due to a deal with the district attorney. He takes justice in his own hands and doesn’t only go after the criminals but also after the people who failed to prosecute the culprits.

The movie is a well done thriller. The main character Clyde Shelton is terrifying and likeable at the same time, hero and villain in one person. Gerard Butler‘s performance in this role is excellent. He manages to engage sympathy for a stone-cold killer.

If you like a good thriller with action and an original story you don’t to want miss Law Abiding Citizen.

Last Wednesday Silke and I watched District 9. I wasn’t completely sure what to expect but it turned out to be a very well made science fiction movie.

District 9 has the usual ingredients: ugly aliens, ray-guns and space ships. But that is where the similarities with a lot of science fiction movies end. A large part of the movie has been shot to look like a documentary which makes the story appear very real. This is emphasized by the all too believable behaviour of the human characters. As the story develops you realise that real monsters often don’t look like monsters from the outside.

District 9 is well worth seeing and uses science fiction to reflect on human behaviour and its consequences.

The movie was just what he had hoped for: hilarious cartoon characters, breakneck action and a lot of humour presented in dizzying 3D. We had a really good time watching the film.

I’m only wondering how much of the fun will be lost when the 2D version is released on DVD or Blu-Ray …

The last two Star Trek movies were quite disappointing. When I heard that the newest movie would be about the young crew of the original Enterprise I thought it would be even worse. But a very favourable review by Spiegel Online whose critics normally despise any remotely entertaining movie sparked my interest.

And Star Trek didn’t disappoint me: action, humour and drama presented at Warp speed. The actors playing the crew of the enterprise are excellent, in particular Chris Pine. He plays James T. Kirk as a daredevil who you hate and love at the same time. He even manages to remind you of William Shatner without being sappy. After two hours which seem to pass in an instant a whole new universe opens up in front of you.

So far Star Trek is definitely the best movie I’ve seen this year.

Silke and I had to go to London to watch our first movie in 3D. Ever since I wanted to see a CGI movie in 3D as the stereoscopic effects worked much better for computer generated images. When I found out that the Vue in Cambridge can now show 3D movies as well I was eager to see Monsters vs Aliens because I liked the trailer even without 3D effects.

The movie itself is a lovely animated film. It has a lot of humour and action mixed with a little bit of sentimentality. It turns out of course that the Monsters are lovely people, while some of the humans are the real monsters. And at the end of an entertaining picture you get your happy ending.

Except for one scene at the beginning the movie doesn’t toy with the 3D effects fortunately. But they definitely enhance the visual impressions a lot. If the camera moves through an asteroid belt it looks like you are really in space. And a car chase in 3D has that extra edge. I’m really looking forward to see what other filmmakers will do with this exciting technology.

I became sceptical about the film because of all the hype.

This evening Silke and I went to watch The Dark Knight ourselves. I must say it deserved all the hype. The movie was exciting, disturbing and full of action. Heath Ledger was simply brilliant. He reached a level of malignant madness that will assure him a place in the midst of legendary movie villains.

All in all it was one of the two best Batman movies ever. It reflected the dark ambience of the comics perfectly.

The movie is refreshingly different from other animated films. It features neither funny talking animals nor living objects with human faces. There is even hardly any dialogue in the first 30 minutes. Instead it delivers a serious message wrapped in a lot of humour. And it manages to do that without benig lecturing.

WALL-E is good entertainment which provides food for thought.

Since 2005 a number of movies using a new 3D technology called Real D have been released. Silke and I used the opportunity and watched the Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D in the Vue in London’s West End yesterday. As we had never seen a Real D movie before we were both very curious.

We received expendable glasses at the entrance. They were available in one size only and didn’t fit me very well. After the advertising we were asked to put them on because most of the trailers were using Real D, too. The effect was amazing. It took me a few seconds to stop trying to evade things which seemed to come out of the screen.

The main movie started with a bunch of computer generated images with very convincing 3D effects. Things did however change a bit when the live-action started. The scenery frequently looked like it consisted of multiple layers of cardboards with photos on them. When the actors were shown in a computer generated landscape they looked a bit like 2D figures in a 3D world. Scenes like the roller coaster ride were exciting nevertheless.

Overall the 3D effects are very good in computer generated scenes but could be better in live-action. It would also be nice if the glasses were available in different sizes. The movie itself was an average adventure film, entertaining but nothing special.
